From Chaos to Clarity: How Interior Designers Can Build Confidence Through Better Systems

Running an interior design studio shouldn't mean sacrificing your evenings, weekends, and creative energy to administrative chaos. Yet many talented designers find themselves trapped in a cycle of overwhelm—juggling client details across multiple platforms, searching endlessly for procurement updates, and becoming the bottleneck in their own business.

Interior designer and business coach Lesley Myrick knows this struggle firsthand. With over 20 years of design experience and a thriving coaching practice through Nancy Quinn's Profit Insiders Academy, she's helped countless designers transform their businesses by implementing systems that actually work.

How interior designers can build confidence

Lesley Myrick on pricing with power and why structure sets you free

Lesley Myrick is an adventurous and intuitive interior designer, known for creating personality-driven, playful, and function-forward "forever homes" for high-achieving professional families across Middle Georgia and beyond. In addition to running her award-winning design firm, Lesley Myrick Interior Design, she empowers fellow designers as a business coach with Nancy Quinn in the Profit Insiders Academy.

When a designer's brain becomes the main storage system, that's usually the first red flag. If you're constantly searching for info, juggling the same details in five different places, or your team is always waiting on you for answers, it's time for an upgrade.

I once coached a designer whose design work was absolutely stellar—but the backend chaos meant she was constantly dropping the ball, both personally and professionally. She'd spend hours searching for order updates, trying to remember which version of a spreadsheet was current, and manually creating purchase orders and invoices.

The transformation happened when we built out a repeatable project management workflow and moved all her sourcing and specs into one organized hub. Within six months, she finally had breathing room in her schedule—and within a year, her revenue had doubled because she could take on larger, higher-value projects without burning out.

Learning to talk about money early and often was a game-changer for me. For a long time, I tiptoed around pricing because I didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable, including myself. But money is neutral. What feels expensive to me might feel perfectly reasonable—or even inexpensive—to someone else.

Now I practice saying my numbers out loud before every proposal meeting, so they roll off my tongue without hesitation. Then I say the number, and I stop talking. That pause used to feel unbearable, but it's powerful.

Confidence isn't about having all the right words; it's about knowing your value and letting that silence do the heavy lifting.

Confidence changes everything. It's what lets you stop pricing from fear and start pricing from value. It's what helps you delegate instead of micromanage. And it's what keeps you steady when growth feels uncomfortable.

Confidence isn't something you're born with; it's something you build by taking small, brave steps every day. You don't become confident and then take action—you take action and become confident. It's not glamorous (and it can be super uncomfortable at times!), but it works.

    Lesley Myrick

A clear client workflow is a game changer. I have a six-step process for every full-service project that keeps things organized from kickoff to install. It's not fancy, it's just consistent. And consistency saves so much mental energy.

For tools, I'm a big believer in using what actually works for you. I love that platforms like Programa exist to make procurement easier—especially for designers with big teams or product-heavy projects.

...what matters most is having a system that fits your business.

    Lesley MyrickInterior Design Business Coach

I've always been pretty strong on the systems side, but when I started my business in 2015, a lot of the tools we rely on today simply didn't exist. I used to create spec sheets manually in Google Docs and track everything in spreadsheets. When interior design-specific software tools came on the scene, it felt revolutionary.

Since then, I've kept adapting as technology has evolved, but I try to keep my tech stack as lean as possible. "Fewer, better things" is my motto in both design and business. Instead of chasing every new platform, I invest deeply in a few tools that truly fit how my team and I work, and I make sure we're using them to their full potential.

Whether it's project management, client communication, or sourcing, simplicity and consistency always win.

    Lesley Myrick

Many designers worry that too much structure will take the magic out of the creative process. I used to feel that way too, until I realized that structure doesn't stifle creativity, it protects it.

When the systems are in place, I don't have to waste mental energy figuring out the "how" every time. That clarity gives me room to explore the "what if."

Having a strong business back-end keeps projects running smoothly and my mind free to design with confidence and curiosity.

    Lesley MyrickInterior Design Business Coach

If you're feeling stuck or scared about scaling, start by documenting one process you do all the time—like onboarding a client or developing a concept design. Write down every single step, even the small ones, and store it somewhere that's easy to refer back to. That's your first system. You can refine it later, but getting it out of your head and onto paper is a massive first win.

From there, don't try to do it all alone. Growth happens faster when you have support and accountability; someone who can help you see what's working, spot the gaps, and keep you focused when things feel messy.

Every designer I've coached who's scaled successfully has done it one clear process and one brave step at a time—but always with a trusted sounding board in their corner.
