Perifio, a NYC-based interior design studio, transformed a compact Upper West Side apartment into a warm, light-filled sanctuary that balances pre-war charm with modern luxury.

When NYC-based interior design studio Perifio took on the renovation of an 800-square-foot Upper West Side apartment, they were tasked with balancing pre-war character and modern comfort, all within a tight footprint. It was their first Manhattan project - and one that came with structural overhauls, 20-foot ceilings, and the pressure to make every inch count.

Storage was a major challenge. “Basically, there was none,” says co-founder Matt Bidgoli. Custom millwork became the solution, with multifunctional pieces like an upholstered dining banquette that doubled as storage. A statement green kitchen became the heart of the home, while a lofted bedroom and bathroom required clever joinery and a serious eye for proportion.

Design Approach: The renovation respected the apartment’s historic architecture while maximizing functionality. A key focus was making the most of the space without compromising on character or comfort.
Custom Detailing: A bespoke walnut credenza, shelving, and a storage-rich dining nook were crafted to optimize space. The kitchen features a standout Silver Roots marble island and backsplash—adding a dramatic, natural touch.
Materials & Mood: Rich wood tones, velvets, linens, and textured wools lend depth and a tactile warmth to the interiors.
Artful Layering: The team curated a personalized art collection that blended vintage Swedish, American, and Brazilian ceramics with expressive French artworks, giving the apartment a worldly and intimate atmosphere.
Ambience: Expansive windows allow light to flood the apartment, enhancing the airy, serene mood. The space is equally suited to quiet living and entertaining.
